The name Montevideo is said to have come from the name “Monte vide eu,” or “I saw the mount” which is what an unnamed soldier shouted when he first saw the hill on which it is built. During the siege of Montevideo, the city harbored thousands or people including refugees from all across the country who were trying to outrun the Whites attacks.
